SRCA News and Notes

PRAYER REQUESTMary Derby had an unpleasant encounter with poison ivy. it has caused a swollen eye and accompanying rash. Please pray for the swelling to be healed, and for the rash to fade - not in its usual time but with miraculous speed!

FOR SUNDAY
For over 1500 years humanity held a geocentric view of the universe –the view that put Earth in the center of everything. When Galileo, Copernicus and Kepler espoused a heliocentric model, a model placing the sun at the center of all the action, it was a hard sell. Cries of heresy arose, and the scientific world of the times was thrown into turmoil. Even today 18% of all Americans think the Earth is at the center of the universe.

Each of us creates our own "universe," our own sphere of influence or circle of living, and we would like to set ourselves up as the center of our lives. Our trinity becomes "me, myself, and I." With those words we hopefully realize that this is not a Christian construct, for the Christian Trinity is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is the Christian God who claims to be at the center of all creation – at he center of the universe, not in a metaphysical way, but in a spiritual way. The question for us becomes, "Who or what is at the center of the universe as reflected by our lives?"  The Thunderous thought for Sunday is that we are not the center of the universe!

Sunday's scriptures include Proverbs 25:6-7, Psalm 112, Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16, and Luke 14:1, 7-14.  Plan to come and worship the living God with us!

Faithfully,

Becki+

SRCA News and Notes

NOTES
Please park in the front of the school The side lot will be used for our Blessing of the Backpacks event after worship.

Youth and Children: Bring you back to school backpack to have it blessed - and to receive a little item or two to go inside.

We will be setting up at 8:00. This is separate from regular worship set up. Please come early to help, if possible.

If you have a SRC tee shirt , consider wearing it on Sunday! We will have SRCA nametags for parishioners to wear.

Plan to stay and "sit a spell" and enjoy fellowship and food. This is a picnic for us as well as an opportunity to reach out. We will need help cleaning up as well as setting up!

It's not too late to invite someone to attend! If you have invited someone and they are on the fence about attending - offer to pick them up!

Dear Parish Family,

On Sunday as we come together to worship the living God we will hear God's Word, gather around the Lord's table, and then carry our celebration out into the side parking lot for fellowship, fun, and food. During our worship all backpacks will be blessed, and we will also pray a special back to school prayer over our children.

Our readings this morning were selected to emphasize the thunderous thought of the day – 'Children are the church NOW!" Children are not to be relegated into the "future of the church." Our readings this morning include: Jeremiah 1:4-10, Psalm 71:1-6, 1 Timothy 4:12-16, and John 6:1-15. The sermon this morning will include several short stories that illustrate the ways children can have an impact on the Kingdom of God.

Plan to worship with us Sunday, especially if you have been away for a while. You are the church, you know, and when you aren't here the church is incomplete!

Faithfully,

Becki+

SRCA News and Notes

Dear Parish Family,

Sunday we will welcome the worship band from The Fellowship of Christ The Savior, an Anglican church plant in the Baltimore area. They graciously agreed to assist this morning so Tom and Teri could have some much needed time off.

Please continue to invite friends and neighbors to our event next Sunday, August 22. Pick up some fliers on Sunday and hand them out to your neighbors. We need all hands on deck to man the event; you can sign up on the hospitality table. We also have some church business cards; these may be given to folks you might meet  - pray and hand them out as the Lord leads – he WILL lead you! It is so important that we are in the business of inviting others to "Come and see that the Lord is good."

We will need help at 8:00 to set up some of the activities. Please volunteer to help with set up and clean up (about 1:30). Needs include: any size folding tables for games and activities, canopies, and traffic cones. Please email if you can help by loaning us any of the above items. Please drop any items you may have off at 8 am on Sunday morning, Aug 22. Please stay and help with set up if possible. This set up is independent of the regular church worship set up.

South Riding's fall yard sale is September 11, and we have reserved a table. Please weed through your BOOKS, DVDs and MUSIC CDs and plan to donate them for the yard sale. We will have drop off information in the near future. A few good folks are needed to man the table. All funds raised will go to outreach.

Our readings for this Sunday include Jeremiah 23:23-29. Psalm 82, Hebrews 11:29-12:2, and Luke 12:49-56. The thunderous thought for the day is "We are not alone." We are, indeed, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. What does that mean? In today's culture there is much confusion about the occult, about loved ones that have gone on before us, about spirits and ghosts. What does it really mean for us to be surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses?

Join us this Sunday for worship.  We are here each week faithfully worshipping the God who first loved us.

Faithfully,

Becki+

PRAYERS REQUESTED

Please pray for Cindy as she undergoes treatment for cancer.

Please pray for David G., close friend of the Neumann family. He has cancer and is currently battling pneumonia.

VESTRY NEWS
Vestry Minutes from the June meeting are attached.

PARISH NEWS

Wonderful things are happening at South Riding Church! Have you told your friends and neighbors about our "Blessing of the Backpack" event on Sunday, August 22nd? Our worship will be "child friendly," and will flow out into the side parking lot for food, fun, and fellowship. This is a "combo-event," designed as an outreach and as fun for our current church family. Please pick up fliers to hand out and to hang up! You are wonderful folks and we have a wonderful church – it's time to share that good news and invite others into the family!

Our readings for Sunday include Genesis 15:1-6, Psalm 33:12-22, Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16, and Luke 12:32-40. The theme in the readings is having faith. What is the source of our faith? When faith seems scarce, often it is not more faith that we need, but more of Jesus. In every situation we encounter He must increase, and we must decreases (to quote John the Baptist.) When we have more of Jesus – more understanding, more of his Spirit, more of his attributes, our faith will spontaneously increase.  Our thunderous thought for the day is just that, "He must increase, we must decrease." That is especially true as we reach out to grow His church.

The one prayer God will always answer with a yes is when we ask for more of him. As you encounter Him in worship today, ask Him to fill and refill you with his Spirit… more of Him, less of us.

You are the best, and I am so glad you are part of SRCA!
