SRCA News and Notes

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Sunday, August 22 - the blessing of the backpacks with picnic and children's activities to follow. Worship at 10:00 and activities at 11:15. Please invite your neighbors and friends, especially those not attached to a church.

Dear Parish Family,

The calendar and the heat say, "summer is here." The church calendar tells us that this Sunday is the tenth Sunday after Pentecost. We are in the midst of "growing season (that is why the liturgical color is green). Our lessons for Sunday come from Proper 13 in the Revised Common Lectionary, which is used in many liturgical churches and some non-liturgical churches as well. Those lessons include: Hosea 11:1-11, Psalm 107:1-9, 43, Colossians 3:1-11, and Luke 12:13-21.

In Hosea we will hear of the incredible love of the Father toward his children. The Psalm is a psalm of thanksgiving for God's steadfast love. Paul writes of the transformation that takes place when a person comes to be in Christ. In the gospel reading Luke recounts for us the parable of the rich young fool.

Can you imagine arriving in heaven to have God greet you by saying, "Fool?" I think I can safely say none of us wants to hear that. Why did God offer such a rebuke to the "rich young ruler, aka 'fool'?" It seems from the story that he had laid up treasure for himself but was not "rich toward God."

What does it mean to be rich toward God? We can begin with realizing that everything belongs to God. It's all his… and we get to keep most of it. That's our thunderous thought for the day: we get to keep 90%!

Worship is a habit... how's your habit forming this summer? See you on Sunday!

SRA News and Notes

Dear Friends in Christ,

Sunday will mark the 63rd day of prayer for our church in our 100 days of prayer. Please take the time each day to pray for our life together, for the financial needs and health of the parish, and for the Lord to draw people to himself through us.

This morning we celebrate the 9th Sunday after Pentecost. Our scripture lessons include: Hosea 1:2-10, Psalm 85, Colossians 2:6-19, and Luke 11:1-13. We are seven weeks into our summer sermon series: "Thunderous Thoughts about God, Us, and Life." Thunderous thoughts to date include:
*The God who created every living, breathing thing cares about YOU!
*You can never be good enough for God – and you don't have to be.
*We will do greater things than Jesus did – he said so himself.
   *God wants ALL of you.
*Though we don't understand how, prayer works!

*Jesus is the object of our worship.

Our thunderous thought for Sunday is the most remarkable statement imaginable… The one who is absolutely sinless, completely holy and without blemish – LIVES IN YOU! Such a thought is absolutely incomprehensible in any other system of religious belief. It is an utterly absurd claim, and yet it is completely true. Jesus lives in you – not just in some metaphorical way, but in actuality. What difference does it make… all the difference in the world.

I'm blessed beyond measure to be here with you all. Thanks for coming Sunday by Sunday to worship the God who created you and who loves you.

Faithfully,

Becki+
