Dear Parish Family,

Announcing the birth of Alyssa Campbell L., born to Kimberely and Ben. Alyssa was born Tuesday morning. She is healthy and beautiful!

Kimberly and Ben are using the website www.takethemameal.com. Contact Pastor Becki for the password to sign up. Meals over the next few months, and especially as Ben returns to work and resumes traveling in late February, will be greatly appreciated. Let's do our usual wonderful job of ministering to this family!

Bishop John Guernsey, and his wife Meg+ are scheduled to be with us tomorrow evening, Saturday, and Sunday. Please call the parish office for more details.

On Sunday we will celebrate the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany. Our readings include Deuteronomy 18:15-20 , Psalm 111, 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, and Mark 1:21-28 . Bishop John will be celebrating Eucharist, preaching, and confirming four of our members. Plan to attend to support your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Please note that the Women's Bible Study is cancelled for Monday, Jan. 30th. It will resume on Feb. 5th.

Lastly, a reminder that Bruce and I leave on Monday, January 30th for a teaching trip to Alaska, where there is over 100 inches of snow on the ground, and the temps have been in the negative numbers for several weeks. I will be teaching on a highly sensitive subject, and I covet your prayers.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Please continue to pray for the seven churches who now stand to lose their properties: The Falls Church, Truro, Church of the Epiphany Herndon, St. Stephen's Heathsville, St. Margaret's Woodbridge, Church of the Apostles Fairfax, and St. Paul's Haymarket. Pray for peace and joy for the congregations and wisdom for the legal minds seeking a way forward.

On Sunday we will celebrate the Third Sunday after Epiphany. Our readings include Jonah 3:1-5,10, Psalm 62:5-12, 1 Corinthians 7:29-31, and Mark 1:14-20.

Next Saturday our Bishop, John Guernsey, will be with us to do a bit of talking and teaching, as well as enjoying some good SRCA fellowship. From 4:30 until 7:30 we will be at eh Dulles South Community Center. Please RSVP by calling the church office at 703-961-1983. We want to have plenty of food, and enough materials for the children and youth program (run by Zach Neumann). This will be wonderful time to join together and hear our bishop's words of encouragement. All are welcome to attend, members and guests!

On Sunday, January 29th Bishop John will be celebrating Eucharist, preaching, and confirming several of our members. Plan to attend to support your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Lastly, a reminder that Bruce and I leave on Monday, January 30th for a teaching trip to Alaska, where there is over 90 inches of snow on the ground, and the temps have been in the negative numbers for a week or two. I will be teaching on a highly sensitive subject, and I covet your prayers. I have attached an intercessor's prayer chart. Dear Family in Christ,

I share the following news, as distributed by our diocese:

"(January 10, 2012) – Seven Anglican congregations in Virginia that are parties to the church property case brought by The Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia are reviewing today's ruling by the Fairfax County Circuit Court that the property should be turned over to the Episcopal Diocese.

The Circuit Court heard the case last spring after the Virginia Supreme Court remanded it in June 2010. The congregations previously had succeeded in their efforts on the Circuit Court level to defend the property that they bought and paid for.

"Although we are profoundly disappointed by today's decision, we offer our gratitude to Judge Bellows for his review of this case. As we prayerfully consider our legal options, we above all remain steadfast in our effort to defend the historic Christian faith. Regardless of today's ruling, we are confident that God is in control, and that He will continue to guide our path," said Jim Oakes, spokesperson for the seven Anglican congregations.

The Rev. John Yates, rector of The Falls Church, a historic property involved in the case, stated, "The core issue for us is not physical property, but theological and moral truth and the intellectual integrity of faith in the modern world. Wherever we worship, we remain Anglicans because we cannot compromise our historic faith. Like our spiritual forebears in the Reformation, 'Here we stand. So help us God. We can do no other.'"

Dear Friends in Christ,

On Sunday we will celebrate The Feast of the Epiphany, that time at which the wise men came to see the Christ child. Epiphany, and the season following, is a season focused on celebrating the divinity of Jesus (just as Christmas celebrates the humanity of Jesus), on the light of Christ that has come into the whole world. Jesus is not simply a cute baby in a dirty manger surrounded by lowing cows and baa-ing sheep. Jesus is a king before whom kings come and kneel, to whom they give their most precious gifts. Jesus is not just for those in Bethlehem, or in Judah or Israel, he is for the Wise Men, too, the easterners... the Gentiles, for us and for those around us. And, we are to be part of sharing HIm with the world. Our readings will include: Isaiah 60:1-6, Psalm 72:1-14, Ephesians 3:1-12, and Matthew 2:1-12.

Confirmation / Inquirer's classes begin Sunday afternoon a 2:00 at the 304. It is not too late to join this time of preparation and deeper understanding prior to the bishop's visit on January 27-29.

Youth Group, This Sunday 5-7 at the 304. Open to all in grades 6 and up.

At SRCA, we walk alongside each other without pretense, seeking to love each other as Christ would. It is a place to struggle with questions and doubts, to find answers and support. All are welcome to join us as we seek to know and follow him." Please join the conversation and fellowship!

Finally, The Alpha Marriage Course begin this coming Friday, 1/13. There are still one or two spots open. Please let me know by return email if you are interested in coming. or speak to Don, Gail, or the Branches on Sunday. Investing 2.5 hours a week for 8 weeks in your marriage is one of the most important investments you will ever make. Let's take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Dear Friends in Christ,

This Sunday, January 1, we celebrate, "The Holy Name," or the day on which Jesus was marked as one of the covenant people of God and given his name. What a wonderful day to celebrate baptism - the bringing into Christ's Church a little child. Please join us as we baptize Olias Owenya, son of Haika and Ephrata Owenya.

We welcome some dear returning friends to lead our music this Sunday. Please take the time to thank Gil and Jan Siler for their willingness to come and share thehir gift of music with us.

Our readings will include Numbers 6:22-27 , Psalm 8 , Philippians 2:5-11, and Luke 2:15-21 .

Make it your first New Year's resolution to spend time with your church family in worship and prayer each Sunday in 2012. I look forward to seeing you there this week!

Dear Friends in Christ,

Christmas Eve Worship begins at 5:00. There will be no worship on Christmas Day. We will see everyone on January 1!

On Christmas eve we celebrate the most incredible gift ever given, the birth of God into the human race, Jesus, fully God and fully man, is unique among all religions. Only in Jesus is the believer offered forgiveness of all the wrong and selfish things they have ever done, said, thought, or intended. Jesus affects a full and complete reconciliation between us and the one who created us. In Jesus we are reconnected to the source of all life. We can know for certain that all of our sins have been forgiven, and that we will be with God forever.

Blessings be upon you this Christmas, and in the days ahead. It is a season that lasts twelve days (until January 6). I invite you to draw closer to Jesus each of those twelve days, turning over more and more of your life to his infinite love, wisdom, and care.

May you have the most joyous of Christmas seasons.

Dear Friends in Christ,

This Sunday marks the fourth Sunday of Advent. Our children and youth will present a Christmas Pageant titles, "Follow That Star" Please invite friends and neighbors to attend!

We have an opportunity to make Christmas happen for a family involved in a Domestic Violence Shelter program. . On Sunday we will receive a special free will offering toward making their Christmas a joy-filld time.

Please sign up Sunday or by responding to this email if you would like a Christmas poinsettia in thanksgiving for or in memory of a loved one. Small poinsettias are $6.00, and large are $16.00. They can be taken home after Christmas Eve worship.

Christmas Eve worship will begin at 5:00. This is a wonderful time to invite unchurched friends and neighbors. It often takes dozens of invitations before someone actually accepts. Don't give up! Invite!!

Beginning Friday, January 13, we will be running the Alpha Marriage Course. Strengthening your marriage is the best investment you can ever make in your family. No marriage is at its peak without intentional work and attention. The course is open to friends and you are encouraged to invite a couple to attend with you. There is no charge for the course (we received a grant to run it). All work is done between couples. There is no large group discussion. I urge you to sign up take advantage of the opportunity to invest in your own well being. You can sign up on Sunday, or by responding to this email. We must pre-register folks so we have enough materials, and enough food for dinner.

Our Bishop, The Rt. Rev. John Guernsey, will be visiting with us Jan. 27-29. We will have a special all parish event on Saturday the 28th, from 4:00 until 8:00. Please save the date! Dear Parish Family,

This coming Sunday marks the third Sunday of Advent. The readings of the day include Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11, i Thessalonians 5:16-24, and John 1:6-8, 19-28. Advent is a season of preparation - preparing our hearts to receive once again the greatest gift ever given. Another way way to prepare your heart for worship is to plan to arrive 5 minutes early to settle into your seats and pray before the start of the service.

Please continue to pray about your giving for the support of SRCA. Your tithes and giving are our only source of income for operations. If you did not have the opportunity to turn your pledge card in last week, please bring it this week. We are counting on every family to give for the spread of God's kingdom.

Our Christmas Pageant rehearsal is Sunday. All children who hope to be in the pageant are asked to be there for the rehearsal. The pageant will be held on Sunday, Dec. 18. Please sign your children and youth up to participate by responding to this email. We have a variety of parts that need assigning, and plenty of parts for those who don't want to say anything. The title of the pageant is "Follow That Star."

This Sunday the youth will gather for youth Bible Study, a service project, and supper. Please plan to join in the fun if you are in grades 6-12. The time is 5-7:30, at the 304.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This coming Sunday marks the second Sunday of Advent. The readings of the day include Isaiah 40:1-11, 2 Peter 3:8-15, and Mark 1:1-8. Advent is a season of preparation - preparing our hearts to receive once again the greatest gift ever given. We have 6 women going to NYC on Dec. 10th via the Megabus (seats with wifi and outlets, and a restroom on board). We leave DC at 6:15 and return about 10:00. I may still be able to add more, so email me at pastorbecki@gmail.com if you want to go.

Dear Parish Family,

Tomorrow, we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent. The readings of the day include Isaiah 64:1-9, 1 Corinthians 1:3-9, and Mark 13:24-37. During Advent we will not be using the Psalm. Our liturgy will reflect the call of Advent to step back and slow down. Our Advent wreath stands ready to be lit as we measure time awaiting the coming of the Christ Child once again.

An update onOperation Christmas Child boxes: When all was said and done we sent a total of 75 boxes! Well done, SRCA!

Please continue to pray about your giving for the support of SRCA. Your tithes and giving are our only source of income for operations. Next Sunday we will bless our pledge cards. Please be sure to turn yours in. I am personally challenging every family to make a faith promise to God's work in the from of sacrificial giving. God will bless our church, but we must do his bidding and our part.

Dear Parish Family,

On Sunday, November 20, we celebrate the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost, commonly called Christ the King Sunday. The readings of the day include Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24, Psalm 95:-7a, Ephesians 1:15-23, and Matthew 25:31-46.

We will be blessing our Operation Christmas Child boxes this Sunday. Plan to join us as we celebrate God's call on us to make a difference on the world. I will also share briefly about the first full synod meeting of our new diocese, The Diocese of the Mid Atlantic (DOMA).

Dear Parish Family,

On Sunday, November 13, we celebrate the 22nd Sunday after Pentecost. The readings of the day include Zephaniah 1:7, 12-18, Psalm 90:1-8, (9-11), 12, 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11, and Matthew 25:14-30. We will be using the First Thessalonians and Matthew readings in our worship.

We will also hold our Annual Parish Meeting. We will begin right after worship, and I anticipate us being finished by 1:00. Lunch will be provided. This is a very important part of our life together. Please make every effort to attend.

Sunday evening the youth are going Laser Tagging at the Panther Family Fun Center. I need a head count so I can arrange to have transportation there and back. Please RSVP with the number (it can be approximate) of youth grades 5 and up who plan to attend. The cost is $8.50 for 1 game, or $20.00 for 3, and refreshments are available for purchase. We will meet in the parking lot at the 304, at 5:00, and return there at 7:30. I will need a volunteer driver or two.

Operation Christmas Child is winding up. We have quite a ways to go to equal last year's total. If you have already sponsored a box, please consider sponsoring another one. If you have not sponsored a box, please do so! This Sunday is the last date to sign up. All boxes that were taken to be filled must be returned to church no later than Sunday, Nov. 20.

Dear Parish Family,

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of All Saints. We will take a few moments to pray and give thanks for those who have gone before us, including Ken Achterhof, who was buried from our parish within this past year. We will also pray for all veterans, who give up so much to protect the country we love. Our readings will include Revelation 7:9-17, Psalm 34:1-10, 22; 1 John 3:1-3, and Matthew 5:1-12. Our worship will include the reaffirmation of our baptismal promises, and will include our children.

Next Sunday, November 13, we will hold our Annual Parish Meeting immediately following worship. This meeting will bring you up to date on the state of the parish, and will allow for the election of 3 vestry members to replace those rotating off: Mary Derby, Paul Branch, and Jason Wheeler. Charlie Meadows, Paul Branch and Jason Wheeler have graciously agreed to stand for election. (Our by-laws permit a person to serve consecutive terms.) Lunch will be served, and a movie provided for the children. All baptized members age 16 and older, who have been members for 1 year or longer, and who are in good standing (who attend regularly and give faithfully for the support of the parish) are eligible to vote. If you need clarification as to whether you may vote, please call or email me. It is important that all attend!

We need a volunteer in our nursery each week along with Elizabeth. Teens in grades 9 and up along with adults are encouraged to sign up at the hospitality table.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD is in full swing! Each box costs about $20.00 to assemble. Our goal is 75+ boxes, and we are running a bit behind. Time is short, so now is the time to give towards this outreach ministry.

EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT SOUTH RIDING CHURCH!

Saturday, November 12: Women's "Seaside Escape," Location: The Bishop Claggett Center, about an hour from SR. Come away for a day to refresh and re-energize. Open to all ladies in the parish, daughters in grades 6 and up, and their invited guests. Register today. Cost is $35.00 and includes lunch and materials. (The facility is handicapped accessible.) It's not too late to join in the fun!!

YOUTH ACTIVITY:

Eveyone in grades 5 and up is invited to go Lazar tagging on Sunday, Nov. 13 beginning at 5 pm. A flier is attached to this email with all of the info. Please invite your friends!

Saturday, Dec. 10: Women's trip to NYC. Look for the signup sheet. Cost will depend on how many women are going. We will rent a van (driver already in place) or hire a bus if we have enough women to make it the better value).

Dear Parish Family,

Two weeks ago I attended a preaching conference. (It was wonderful!) One of the many things that struck me was the importance of continuing to pray for each member of the parish by name on a regular basis. To facilitate this I would like to get a photo of each family. The photo will go in my parish prayer journal (they will also be used in the secure, online directory I hope to get up and running). I will be dividing the parish list into 6 sections, and assigning each section a day of the week. Once finished, I will let you know which day I will be praying for you! My goal is to begin photographing on Sunday and to finish the day of hte annual parish meeting, Nov. 13.

This Sunday we celebrate the 20th Sunday after Pentecost. Our readings will include Joshua 3:7-17, Psalm 107:1-7 and 33-37, 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13, and Matthew 23:1-12. We will also bless our new acolytes and present them with their acolyte crosses. All returning acolytes will receive the next color cord for their current cross.

To those interested in being an acolyte: If you were unable to make the training last week, Meghan will met with you briefly right after the service on Sunday.

We need a volunteer each week. Teens in grades 9 and up may volunteer, along with adults. Please look for the sign up sheet on the hospitality table.

Beginning this Sunday we will be accepting donations toward OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (the shoe boxes). Each box costs $20.00, or you may get instructions and pack your own box. Please be generous!

Dear Friends in Christ,

This is an exciting time to be a part of the Anglican Church! This past Wednesday I had the great joy of being part of first Standing Committee meeting in our newly formed diocese. The Standing Committee serves as both the executive committee of the diocese, and as a "council of advice" to the bishop. Bishop John began the meeting with both prayer and a brief Bible study, keeping Christ as the focus of all we do.

Our opportunity is ever before us to invite our friends and neighbors to come and worship with us, to "taste and see that the Lord is good." Our call is to live out the great commission, inviting people to the knowledge and love of Jesus. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you the courage to share the treasure you have in Christ, and in his wonderful church here at SRCA.

After church on Sunday we will head over to the Branch home / welcome center lawn for our annual picnic. Please bring lawn chairs and a dish to share (if you didn't sign up, just bring something you figure folks will enjoy.) EVERYONE is welcome - and please invite your neighbors! The scripture lessons for Sunday provide ample evidence that "authority issues" are nothing new. Dear Friends in Christ,

This Sunday we celebrate "National Back to Church Sunday," along with the fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost. What a joyous day, when the gospel lesson reminds us that it is never too late to accept the gift of God in our lives.

Our lessons will include Exodus 16:2-15, Psalm 105:1-6, 37-45, Philippians 1:21-30, and Matthew 20:1-16. If I were to name a prominent theme in these readings I would say "grumbling."

In the gospel reading the laborers hired early in the day grumble when those hired later receive the same wages. In the reading from Exodus the people of God grumble about food and water. Even Paul seems to grumble about remaining here on earth to do the Lord's work when he would rather be with Christ in the heavenlies. Only the psalmist reminds us that "One generation shall praise your works to another, and shall declare your power." What is rumbling around in our hearts, grumbles or gratitude? And, if it's grumbles, what will help us make the switch?

Welcome to worship. I pray you will encounter Jesus in the liturgy, in word, and in the breaking of the bread.

Dear Parish Family,

Where were you ten years ago on 9/11? Most of us will never forget the moment when we realized what was happening in Washington, in New York, and in the rural countryside of Pennsylvania. Directly or indirectly, our lives were affected, our emotions were stirred, and our sense of safety was shaken. We found ourselves confronted with evil; and our initial response was disbelief, grief, sadness, and anger. While refer to Sept. 11, 2001 as 9/11, most of us have had several 9/11 type events in our lives – events that shake the foundations of our lives.

What is to be our ongoing response to such actions? Where do we turn when our sense of security is so shaken? Although 9/11 happened one time, ten years ago, many people have been confronted with the face of evil since then; and many of us have had to deal with similar responses to life circumstances. Does God cause these things to happen as some would say? What is God's role in evil, in death, in loss?

The readings for Sunday have something to say about the "9/11" events in our lives, about God's role, and about our response. They include: Genesis 50:15-21, Psalm 103:1-14, Romans 14:1-12, and Matthew 18:21-35.

Please join us for worship! Worshipping together is our central act as a church.

Dear Parish Family,

As school resumes and summer draws to a close, we are set here at SRCA to begin a new program year. Sunday School returns for our children on Sunday, September 11. Our First Thursday Bible Study begins at 7:30 on Sept. 8 (yes, that is the second Monday – we wanted to wait until after Labor Day). This study will connect our current mission, vision, and core values to the Scriptures as we examine what SRCA is called to do and be. Every member is encouraged to participate in this study, as it will help us understand God's call to us as a church. The Women's Monday morning Bible Study begins again on Sept. 12 at 9:30. It will meet at Melinda Mansfield's home, and the topic of the study will be determined that first day. Moms with young children are welcome (as are all women – SRCA members or not). Our Men's studies and home groups continue, and are noted elsewhere in this bulletin. Our youth Bible study fro those in grades 6-12 begins again on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 5:00. It is our goal to have every adult member of our church participate in some sort of small group. Please consider joining in the fun!

A full calendar of events, studies, and opportunities to serve will be published in the near future. Please be sure to pick up your copy.

I also encourage everyone to attend our old/new bishop's investiture as the first bishop of the new Diocese of the Mid Atlantic. This is a truly historic occasion in the life of our church. The Right Reverend John Guernsey invites us all to join him for a glorious celebration at 11:00, Sept. 10, at Truro Church.

Our lessons for today include Exodus 12:1-14, Psalm 149, Romans 13:8-14, and Matthew 18:15-20. We are so blessed to be able to come together freely to worship the Lord. Welcome!

Last Sunday we had a wonderful time with Monte Leister, of "Music with Monte." We sang and moved in worship of Jesus, and our children assisted as we asked God's blessing on four boxes of donated school supplies. Our morning concluded with face painting and glitter tattoos for our children, courtesy of Rob and Melinda Mansfield. Thank you Rob and Melinda!

We have designated this Sunday as "invite a friend Sunday" as we celebrate the 11^th Sunday after Pentecost. Take the time to talk with a neighbor or acquaintance about attending church with you this week. Personal invitation is the number one way people begin attending or return to attending church.

Our readings include: Exodus 3:1-15, Psalm 105:1-6, 23-26, 45c, Romans 12:9-21, and Matthew 16:21-28. We will encounter Moses at the burning bush, hear Paul exhort us about Christian living, and be reminded by Jesus of the cost involved in following him.

At the time of the sermon I will be looking for some "children" wiling to be part of an impromptu skit. Sheep, a burning bush, the voice of God - these are all parts to be cast, so come prepared!

As a part of our worship we will bless our children and their backpacks as we send them off to a new school year. I am blessed to be here with you, and I pray you feel blessed to come and worship our God freely! Welcome to Sunday at SRCA!!

Dear SRCA Friends and Family,

This Sunday, August 21, Monte Liester, of "Music with Monte" will be leading us in worship. We have included special action songs for our children and youth. We will also be finishing our collection of school supplies to be donated to LCPS.

Our worship will conclude with the opportunity for all children to get glitter tattoos or face paint courtesy of Melinda Mansfield.

Please invite your friends and family to attend this special worship service. If you've been away for a while, take this opportunity to begin to reconnect. A good time will be had by all as we gather to worship God!!

If you have an interest in attending Sight & Sound's production of "Joseph" on Thursday, August 25th, please let me know by return email. The cost is $49.00 for adults, $29.00 for teens, and $16.00 for children. We would need to leave at 9 AM on The 25th, have lunch in PA Dutch country, see the 4:00 show, and then return to SR.

On Sunday, August 28th, we will have our "blessing of the backpacks." I am hoping all SRCA Youth will be present and bring their back to school backpack to the service. We are looking at a possible trip to Lancaster, PA, to the Sight and Sound Theater, on August 25th (Thursday ). This would be an all day trip, form 7 AM until 9 PM. The cost for tickets is $16 for children, $30 for teens, and $50.00 for adults. We would also have lunch at a PA Dutch restaurant, and possible go on an Amish buggy tour. If you are interested in going, please respond to this email. This is to determine interest only. I will follow up with more detailed info and the reservation form upon my return from Ghana.

Dear Parish Family,

On Sunday we will celebrate the 6^th Sunday after Pentecost. Our readings include: Genesis 29:15-28, Psalm 105:1-11, 45b , Romans 8:26-39, and Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52. We will hear the pinnacle of Paul's theology, the great assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of God shown us in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul, in several chapters in Romans lays out the difference between life in the flesh and life in the Spirit. As Christ followers, we are called to live according to the leading of the Holy Spirit, using the gifts He has given in addition to our natural abilities, as we seek to be ambassadors fro Christ.

In my own flesh, I would be content to stay right here in SR, and to take these summer days a bit easy. Following the Spirit's prompting (ok, and prodding and pushing) I am headed off for 12 days of mission work in Accra, Ghana, along with Bruce, Zach, and Jackie Coates. We leave on Thursday the 28^th at 11PM form Dulles. Please keep us in your prayers for safe travels and effective witness to the love of Jesus.

We return on August 8^th. Please come out for worship on July 31 and August 7, and give The Rev. Pamela Meeks a warm welcome and your wonderful support.

Dear Parish Family,

My house is strangely quiet today after the departure of our youth mission team. Six of our youth along with Alexandra and I served at New Hope Shelter painting, cleaning and cooking. We gained many insights and new understanding about ourselves and people without permanent housing. The youth team was exemplary in every way. We plan to share during worship tomorrow. You won't want to miss it!

Our readings for Sunday include Genesis 28:10-19a, Psalm 139: 1-14, Romans 8:12-25, and Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43.

Come to worship and hear our youth share how they both saw Jesus at work and perceived Jesus working through them.

SUNDAY, JULY 3RD
On Sunday July 3 we will have our weekly worship gathering at the Bishop Claggett Center. I have attached directions. Please plan to drive out for worship at the end of our family camp. We will have burgers and dogs on the lawn after worship. Bring a drink and a dish to share, and plan to relax fro an hour with your church family. It's a beautiful spot, and is only an hour from South Riding.

FOR SUNDAY
This week we celebrate our children and youth "bridging" to the next grade. Please come out to support them!

We will also have our "Book Club Challenge" for The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe." It Is a time for all to be involved who have read the book, so stick around for the fun!

We will need hep to pack up after the service, especially the sound equipment as we have several folks away this week. Please lend a hand!
Sunday marks the beginning of the long "Season after Pentecost." With its liturgical color being the green of growing things, it represents that season when we learn about Christ and his ministry, and when we continue to grow up in Christ-likeness. It is a fitting Sunday on which to honor the growth of our children and youth as they "bridge," or move from one grade or age group to the next. It is a time to honor their growth, and a time to be attentive to our own growth.
Our readings will include Jeremiah 28:5-9, Psalm 89:1-4, 15-18; Romans 6:12-23, and Matthew 10:4042. In the Romans reading we are reminded that coming to Christ is just the beginning of our life with God. When we are set free from sin, we become servants of God, called to participate in that process called sanctification. It's not just our children who are to grow up into Christ, who is our head, we adults are called to do the same. Thanks be to God that he provides what we need to grow, both opportunity and raw material.
I pray you will join us for worship this week, and that you will encounter Christ in word, in the sacrament, and in each other!

Dear Parish Family,

Tomorrow morning we celebrate Trinity Sunday, when we recall how God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit acted to bring about a creation that was "good." That same God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit brings hope and blessing to us today, in the midst of all the circumstances of life. It is him we gather to honor and glorify in our worship.

We will also recall and pray for all fathers, and those who serve as father figures to us. We offer our thanks to God that He is the perfect Father, who loved us enough to give His only Son for us.

Our readings will include Genesis 1:1-2:4a, Psalm 8, 1 John 1:5-2:6, and Matthew 28:16-20. See you tomorrow!

On Sunday we will celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, marking the coming of the Holy Spirit in great power. Our readings will include: Acts 2:1-21, 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13, John 7:37-39, and Psalm 104:24-35.
In the gospel reading we hear Jesus' great acclamation, made on the last day of the festival of booths, at the great water procession that would have occurred. As the priests were processing seven times around the altar carrying huge jars of water, Jesus declares, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" John clarifies that Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit.
In the past weeks I have attempted to highlight the "job description" of the Holy Spirit, and to speak about the essential nature of the Holy Spirit's activity in the life of a Christian. So many people want nothing to do with the Holy Spirit because they are fearful, or they misunderstand the Spirit's role in our lives.
During Sunday's sermon listen for several illustrations of how the Spirit works in our lives, and why we are so much better off when we invite His gracious activity in our lives. Following Jesus is hard work! As for me, I'm glad to do that in the Spirit's power rather than in my own insufficient strength!

This Sunday our children will be with us in worship. Look forward to the sermon being for them as well as for the adults, and to our children being invited to the altar at the time of the consecration of the bread and the wine - so they can really see and participate in what is happening.

Dear Parish Family,

Several of our women and I will be away for our Women's Retreat this weekend. Please welcome The Rev. Gary Way as preacher and celebrant, and help him to feel at home! Our readings for this morning include Acts 1:6-14, Psalm 68:1-10, 33-36, 1 Peter 4:12-14, 5:6-11, and John 17:1-11.

Next Sunday, June 12^th, we will celebrate the feast of Pentecost, that great day when the Holy Spirit was poured out. Please wear red to symbolize the fire of the Holy Spirit.

On Sunday, June 26^th, I'm praying that all of our children who attended Sunday school this year, along with all those who taught or assisted, can be present for our bridging ceremony. At the conclusion of the service that day we will have our book club finale for June, with teams answering questions about our June book club book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

I will miss worshipping with you all this week! I pray you draw near to Christ as you worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.

On Sunday we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter. Our readings will include Acts 7:55-60, Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16, 1 Peter 2:2-10, and John 14:1-14. In the gospel reading we are reminded that we worship Jesus who is the way, the truth, the life.

We will welcome part of the worship band from The Fellowship of Christ the Savior (CTS), an Anglican church plant in the Baltimore, Maryland area. CTS is a growing congregation that is part of the diocese of the Holy Spirit. This morning a few of the members, including Emerson Champion, acting senior warden, and Tim Welden, lay pastor, will be sharing what God has been doing in their midst over this past year.

As we join together singing and praying, we will welcome our Risen Lord into our midst, that his glory will fill this place, and we might be transformed by his presence among us. Plan to join us!

On Sunday we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Easter. Our readings will include Acts 2:42-47, Psalm 23, 1 Peter 2:19-25, and John 10:1-10. We hear in Acts of the loving community that sprang up in the early church, and in John the comforting words of Jesus as he describes himself as the "Good Shepherd." We are assured that "his sheep hear his voice."

As members of the Christian Church, we are those sheep. We are supposedly able to hear the voice of Jesus leading and guiding us. It's his voice that calls us together to break bread, to fellowship, and to worship joyfully. Why then do so many Christians struggle with knowing what to do and which path to take as they follow the Lord? What is it that deafens our ears to the voice of our master?

Sunday is the Lord's day, and I pray you chose to worship with us. My prayer is that you will know God's blessing as you encounter Jesus as we worship in Spirit and in Truth.

FOR SUNDAY

This week we celebrate the third Sunday of Easter, as we still celebrate the echoes of the alleluias, and the wonder of the empty tomb. The Lord has risen, and has appeared to the women, and to those locked away in the room in Galilee. This morning we hear of his encounter with the men on the Road to Emmaus. There is ample evidence and eyewitness account to tell us that the resurrection did, in fact, occur. While we celebrate this great truth, we always must live in the shadow of the cross.

It is the cross Peter references in his sermon in Acts 2. Addressing the multitude, Peter says, ""Let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified." Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart…" Even while we stand at the doorway of the empty tomb, the knowledge of the cross is never far from our minds, and we, too, are cut to the heart.

Peter's solution for their grief was a call to repentance and to baptism so that they might receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. We are offered that same gift. It is not enough for us to stand in awe at the empty tomb, or enough for us to cry over the cross. We are called to action – to repentance, to affirmation of our faith, and to receive the Holy Spirit.

Our readings Sunday inclued Acts 2:14a,36-41, Psalm 116:1-3, 10-17, 1 Peter 1:17-23, and Luke 24:13-35. Let's join our voices together to worship the Lord Jesus.

Greetings in the Name of Jesus!

This Sunday and for the next 7 Sundays we begin our worship with the acclamation, "Alleluia, the Lord is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!" Easter is not just one Sunday, it is a whole season, beginning on Easter Sunday and ending on Pentecost (June 12^th this year).

This Sunday we will have the great joy of formally welcoming 5 individuals into the body of Christ, the Church, through the sacrament of Holy Baptism. When we do so we make a solemn promise to help them in their spiritual lives, in their walk with Jesus. We are making this promise before God and to people the Lord has entrusted to us. We need take this very, very seriously. It requires us to lay down our lives for our friends in Christ, to show up and speak up so the newly baptized, so Christine, Jackson, Mitchell, Tristan, and Isaac will indeed come to know Jesus through us.

Our readings for Sunday include Acts 2:14a,22-32, Psalm 16, 1 Peter 1:3-9, and John 20:19-31. Let?s join together to worship the God we love, and to celebrate with those whom we baptize into our church family.

On Good Friday we have a dinner at Little River Elementary School at 5:30. You are invited! There is no cost, but donations for our mission work in Ghana are welcome. At 7:00 we will have our beautiful service of Tenebrae. Please come and encounter God through the music and the readings. The service lasts an hour, and nursery care is available.

On Sunday we enter into our joyous celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, our Lord! We will be so pleased to have you worship with us. Easter is a wonderful time to invite your un-churched friends and neighbors to come d see that the Lord is good! It is our hope that we will encounter Jesus in the spoken word, song, and sacrament.

Our Scripture readings Sunday include: Acts 10:34-43, Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24, Colossians 3:1-4 , and Matthew 28:1-10. An angel and an empty tomb – what do they say to us? Be prepared to find out!

Dear Parish Family,

Please hold Ken and Donna in your prayers and in your hearts. Ken is very weak at tis point, and Donna can use our encouragement and prayers fro strength and for peace, even as we pray for Ken for strength and healing.

As we near the end of Lent, the scripture readings point us directly to the clash between life and death. On this, the 5^thSunday of Lent, our reading include Ezekiel 37:1-14, Romans 8:6-11, John 11:1-45, and Psalm 130. We will hear the readings from Ezekiel and John in our worship. Both deal with the power of God to bring life where there is death. Ezekiel experiences a vision where dry bones are returned to life. In John we hear of the actual return to life of a man four days dead and buried.

Many of us have experienced God restoring life to parts of our emotions, minds, and spirits that have been "dead." In the midst of death, God brings life, and he longs to do that in each of us by placing his Spirit, the breath of life, within us, to bring hope and healing, laughter and joy.

I look forward to seeing you in worship Sunday morning. As we plug into the heavenly worship that continues 24/7, I pray that you will draw near to God, and that you will permit him to draw near to you!

Dear Parish Family,

Please remember to bring your membership info forms to church tomorrow. The rate of return is a bit slow! Our records need to be updated and maintained, and we would like to begin work on a new directory.

Gail Haddock is coordinating efforts to send another round of cookies to our troops in Afghanistan. You could bring some to church tomorrow, or drop them by Gail's house on Wednesday evening to help assemble packages (talk to Gail tomorrow or email me for an address).

Youth Bible Study is next Sunday, April 10th, from 5-7 pm at the 304.

Did you know that three of our members are headed to Ghana this summer to run a reading camp for village children? These children learn to read in school, when they can get there, but they have no books or opportunity to read at home. Jackie Coates, Bruce Neumann, and I will travel to Accra in late July.

Tickets for our Good Friday supper (at Little River at 5:30) and Service of Tenebrae are now available. The dinner is by donation, with all funds going to our three missioners to Ghana to help cover trip expenses. This is a wonderful event - please take tickets and invite everyone you know! The service is especially moving - time to invite those friends and acquaintances who don't know Jesus and what he has done for us.
Sunday we celebrate the 4^th Sunday of Lent, meaning we are more than half way through the season. It?s a time to take stock of how we are fairing with our Lenten disciplines. If we have slipped a bit, or forgotten that it?s Lent and time to commit to a bit of sacrifice or discipline, let?s commit to getting back on track. God looks on the heart rather than the outward appearance, but it is important to have our outward actions reflect our heart condition of surrender and obedience to God.
The scripture readings for tomorrow include: 1 Samuel 16:1-13, Ephesians 5:8-14, John 9:1-41, and Psalm 23. We will be using the 1 Samuel and John readings in our worship this morning. Tomorrow's message might be called "Cardiac Care: Heart Exam 101."

Dear Friends

On Sunday we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. The readings appointed for the day include Exodus 17:1-7, Romans 5:1-11, Psalm 95, and John 4:5-42. We will be using the reading from Exodus and the gospel lesson in our worship.

We could title the Exodus reading, "A Grumbling, Thirsty People and the God Who Provides." We hear of God?s people complaining, bringing God up on charges that he has abandoned them to die in the desert. How often have we been those people? When life doesn?t go the way we hope or plan or dream we, too, are inclined to grumble against God and to accuse him of abandonment.

The good news is that God is faithful, even in the face of our accusations! Just as He brought forth water from the rock, he brings forth living water to quench our soul thirst. Let?s join together to worship Him this Sunday in Spirit and in truth.

This Sunday is the first Sunday in Lent. Just as Jesus entered the silence of the desert, we, too, are called to follow Him into the more silent places and seasons. You will notice some changes in our Sunday worship as we make room for God to speak into the silence of this time in the desert. There will be a bit less music, a bit less scripture read aloud, and a bit more silence and room for God to speak in His "still small voice." The silence places may cause some to feel uncomfortable. I make no apology. We live in a world far too noisy and rushed. Creating space and time for God to speak is my job (well, at least a part of it). IT will be good for you (spoken like a true mom)!

The Bible lessons appointed for Sunday include: Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7, Psalm 32, Romans 5:12-19, and Matthew 4:1-11. We will be hearing the lessons form Genesis and Matthew. Though I rarely title my sermons, this week a title has suggested itself: "The Devil Made Me Do It."

Please pick up a "Lenten fasting Cube" and "Mission Offering Can" if you did not get one last week. One other Lenten practice I draw to your attention is that of sacramental confession. This often forgotten discipline can be an excellent way to draw near to God and to feel as though you?ve shed 10 pounds without losing an ounce. Confession can be scheduled by email or by speaking to me.

I am in receipt of an email from the ADV naming The Rt. Rev. John Guernsey (the current bishop of the Diocese of the Holy Spirit and our bishop) And Archdeacon Julian Dobbs as the two nominees for bishop in the newly forming diocese here in northern Virginia. Please pray for these two godly men, and pray for our synod meeting, scheduled for May 20-21, when we will elect the new bishop. FOR SUNDAY

On Sunday we celebrate the last Sunday after the Epiphany, traditionally called "Transfiguration Sunday." Our readings from God's Word include Exodus 24:12-18, Psalm 99, 2 Peter 1:16-21, and Matthew 17:1-9, which is the story of the Transfiguration.

Though Peter, James, and John had walked with Jesus since the beginning of his public ministry, it is clear that here on the Mount of Transfiguration, their understanding of Jesus is transfigured no less than the man before their eyes. No longer is he the teacher – companion they have followed. He is … they are uncertain, but they follow him off the mountain and immediately plunge back into the mission field, with Jesus healing a demon-possessed boy.

As we develop in our faith in and life with Jesus we, too, are called to follow him into the mission field. For this reason, our Archbishop, The Most Reverend Robert Duncan, has called for us to celebrate today as "World Mission Sunday." To that end we are using an international liturgy.

Come, worship with us this week. pray it will draw you to your own Mount of Transfiguration, where you will encounter Jesus in new and unexpected ways.

Special Announcements

DPS GROUPS

DSP groups (That's Dinner/Share/Pray) are now forming. These groups will have 3-4 households and meet monthly to share a meal, share a bit of life, and to pray together for needs and thanks. Each group will rotate the meeting place so as to not stress out any one host. The idea is that the host family provides a main dish (and yes, pizza counts) and each family attending contributes a side or dessert. These initial groups will run from March through June. Please email me now if you wish to sign up. You may sign up for an adults only group (meaning you will leave your children with a sitter) or for a family group. Family groups may send kids to "the playroom" to watch a video while sharing and praying, or may include the children in the sharing and praying. please indicate which type of group you want to join.

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER

Next Tuesday, March 8th, is Shrove Tuesday. Our annual pancake supper will be held at the 304 from 5:30 until 8:00. Please sign now via return email. Please indicate the time you estimate you will arrive, and the number of children and adults. Dinner will include pancakes, sausage, milk, juice, coffee, and tea. Last year we had an excellent turnout, and a good time was had by all. There is no cost, but all funds donated will go toward mission work in Ghana, supporting Jackie Coates, Bruce and myself as we go this summer to work with the children of Akrammaman village.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES

Ash Wednesday is March 9th. Services will be held at the 304 at 7 AM and 7:30 PM. The early service is 30 minutes or less (to get you on your way to work or school). Dear Parish Family,

Sunday we celebrate the 8^th Sunday after the Epiphany. (Next Sunday is the last Sunday after the Epiphany, the last Sunday before we enter into the season of Lent.) Our scripture readings will include Isaiah 49:8-16a, Psalm 131, 1 Corinthians 4:1-5, and Matthew 6:24-34.

In Sunday's gospel reading we hear Jesus say, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life… which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? Jesus gives such wonderful advice, which is so difficult to follow! Perhaps you are a person prone to worry, or perhaps not, but all of us worry at times, even about the things Jesus names in today's reading. Worry can rob us of focus and energy, add to our stress levels, and affect our health. As a church it can distract us from God's call on us to be about the business of advancing the kingdom.

What leads us to worry, and what can we do to live into Jesus' call to us to not worry? Let's explore this gospel imperative and some ways to make it more attainable by us as we follow Jesus.

March 8 is Shrove Tuesday (when our cabinets get "shriven" of all fat before the start of Lent on the 9th. We will host our 2nd annual pancake supper, so save the date!

FOR SUNDAY

These past weeks I have been talking a lot about our call to be ambassadors for Christ, the phrase that begins our mission statement. That statement reads, "Called to be ambassadors for Christ, SRCA is a vibrant body of Christ followers reaching out to bring healing and hope to neighbors near and far so that they will know the power of Christ?s love. We serve our neighbors by tending their spiritual, physical, and emotional, needs through the power of the Holy Spirit."

As we?ve heard, ambassadors represent their homeland while living in a foreign land. Some folks may be thinking, "I didn?t sign up to be an ambassador." By virtue of the fact that we are Christ followers, this is the call upon us. Our choice in the matter is whether we will represent Christ poorly or well. The more attuned we become to the love and mercy embedded in God?s law, the better we are able to represent Jesus. The call for us to be holy as God is holy is a call for us to be salt and light, to be people who can point to a holy and loving God with integrity, because others experience Him through us.

On this coming Sunday, the 7^th Sunday of Epiphany we hear that call, to be holy as God is holy, in our scripture readings. The lessons for the day include Leviticus 19:1-2, 9-18; Psalm 119:33-40; I Corinthians 3:10-11, 16-23; Matthew 5:38-48.

Welcome to our worship. I pray you will draw near to God, and be more and more transformed into His likeness.

Greetings in the name of Jesus,

I just got back from volunteering to cook breakfast at the Ronald McDonald House. What a blessing to provide love, a meal, and a touch of normalcy to folks who are struggling with some of the harder parts of life. In the months ahead we will be seeking this type of hands on service for members of our congregation.

On Sunday we celebrate the 6^th Sunday after the Epiphany. Our scripture readings include Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Psalm 119:1-8, 1 Corinthians 3:1-9, and Matthew 5: 21-37. All focus on the importance of following God's law rather than our own desires.

As a people, as a church, we are called to be ambassadors for Christ. Again and again I go back to the definition of an ambassador – someone who lives in a foreign country with the sole purpose of representing their homeland. As Christ's ambassadors we live in this world, but we are citizens of Christ's kingdom. It is his kingdom we represent, him we are to imitate. When we get sucked into living life by the standard of this world we cease being effective in our role as ambassadors.

My role as your priest is to encourage you to continually develop the mind of Christ, to grow in your faith and understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. To that end I share with you some of the immediate fruit of Faith Alive.

* A new men's Bible study is forming. It will meet in the evening. Please talk to Cris Campbell if you are interested in joining this study.

* Remember the fellowship over dinner at Faith Alive, and the sharing that happened? We will be forming DSP groups. DSP = dinner, share, and pray. Groups will meet monthly. There is a 4 month commitment.

* During Faith /Alive our visiting witnesses shared brief glimpses into what God had done for them. During Lent we will hear from 6 of our own members about what God has done and is doing. Are you one of the 6? Pray and ask the Lord.

Thanks be to God that we might worship Him in spirit and in truth! God is on the move here in SRCA!

Dear Parish Family,

This Sunday we will welcome my two dear sisters in Christ, Mercia and Sophie, from Accra, Ghana, to our worship. They are some of our mission partners working with Ghanaian Mother's Hope. They worship at St. Andrew's Anglican church in Accra when they are home. This is Sophie's first trip to the U.S. Please welcome them as Christ welcomes us!

On Sunday we will celebrate the fifth Sunday after the Epiphany. Our readings will include Isaiah 58:1-12, Psalm 112, 1 Corinthians 2:1-16, and Matthew 5:13-20. We are indeed called to be salt and light.

As I read the Isaiah passage, I was reminded an incident in the summer of 2001. That summer, I was busy running a summer church camp and working on my long-term project for a course in inner healing ministry. The Lord, in his infinite care and wisdom, sent me an intercessor from South Africa – over 9,000 miles away. How she came to camp has God's fingerprints all over the story! Toward the end of her time with us, she came to me with a prophetic word, a bit of scripture that the Lord directed her to give to me. That scripture comes from Isaiah 58. I am reminded again of God's call on me, and most certainly on us to live into it. It says: "And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in."

As we pray for God to draw people to himself, and as we "SALT" we are engaging in the work described by Isaiah. We are called to be part of the work of reconciling the world to the loving God who brought it forth. Thanks be to God for the opportunity to worship together, and to be included in his work.

Greetings in the name of Jesus!

This Sunday we will celebrate the 4^th Sunday after the Epiphany, and the first Sunday after our parish wide Faith Alive weekend. It was a wonderful event, as was the sight of so many families and individuals coming to pray to recommit their lives and families to living under the lordship of Jesus. The Lord has many wonderful and exciting things for us in the weeks ahead. Faith Alive is a beginning, a "fresh start," and not an ending!

Our Scripture readings include Micah 6:1-8, Psalm 15, 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, and Matthew 5:1-12. It is a collection of well known passages: Micah?s question, "What does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" and Paul?s truth statement, "For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God," and the Beatitudes from Matthew.

At the core of all of these passages lies the truth that commitment to Jesus Christ is essential for our relationship with God. While many might like to argue about philosophy or religion, our focus is to know Christ and to make him known as he is the gate through which we enter into God?s presence.

Dear Parish Family,

On Sunday we celebrate the second Sunday after the Epiphany. This is the season in which we recall the spread of the gospel from the manger in Bethlehem to the ends of the earth. Our Scripture readings will include Isaiah 49:1-7, Psalm 40:1-11, 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, and John 1:29-42.

In the Isaiah reading we hear of "the servant," the coming messiah. Isaiah records God as saying to the servant, "I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth." This is fulfilled in the person of Jesus, whom we hear John the Baptist announce in today's reading with these words, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" Immediately some of John's disciples leave him, begin following Jesus, and invite others to do the same.

John the Baptist is clear, he is not the light, he only points to the light. We are just a week away from our Faith Alive weekend. The Lord has called a group of visitors to come and bless us by pointing to the light –to Jesus. I invite you all to come hungry – with open hearts and minds (and ready to share a good meal together as well)!

I pray that you join us in worship on Sunday. It's wonderful to have you with as we enter God's presence and worship him in Spirit and in truth.

Dear Parish Family,

Tomorrow we welcome Tom Riley, the gentleman who has agreed to be our Faith Alive Coordinator. Tom has a long history of serving with Faith Alive, having been weekend coordinator many times, leading the "Faith Stories Retreat" in many places, and serving as board member and president of the ministry. We are delighted to have this faithful witness visit with us today, and lead us in our Faith Alive weekend! God has sent us the best of the best!

In the service of Holy Baptism there are two very important questions about our relationship with our Lord: " Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept Him as your Savior?" and " Do you promise to follow and obey Him as your Lord?" The Faith Alive Weekend is primarily a time to rethink what these promises mean to each of us. As your rector, I cannot say enough about how I pray and long for each of you to participate. Bring your children and teens. Many other things will clamor for their attention – but on this weekend I ask that you set aside the good things and reach with them for the best thing. I have heard from so many of you how you respect my children's faithfulness as adults. Faith Alive played a significant role in their lives. We made attending the weekend events a priority for our family. (And they were glad we did!) Come, taste and see that the Lord is good indeed!

Our Scripture readings for Sunday come from the lessons for The Epiphany (celebrated January 6th) and include Isaiah 60:1-6, Psalm 72:1-14, Ephesians 3:1-12, and Matthew 2:1-12. Come, let us bend the knee with the wise men, and worship the King of Kings.

We had a wonderful Christmas celebration last weekend beginning with our Christmas Eve worship, and continuing right through Sunday's service of Lessons and Carols.

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE

We have seen an 80% increase in giving. This is a wonderful increase over last year. If you have not submitted a pledge card would you please pray about doing so?

Christmas Eve Worship 5:00 with Traditional Carols, Candlelight, and Communion

Tonight we celebrate the "Feast of the Nativity of our Lord." It's such a large title for the birth of such a tiny baby. But the birth of this tiny baby changed the entire world. Have you ever considered that even time itself bends the knee at the birth of Jesus (B.C. or B.C.E – JESUS – A.D. or C.E.)?

We gather this night to worship the one of whom John writes, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, he was with God in the beginning." Jesus was and is God, and he invites us to kneel in awe at the manger, as we invite Him anew to enter into our heats.

Welcome to our worship of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, who began his life in manger bed, and who gave his life on a rough hewn cross. We are so glad to come together to worship Him.

Dear Friends in Christ,

"I bring you glad tidings of great joy"… we await that proclamation each year as we approach Christmas – the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord. This year I dare to make that same proclamation on this, the Fourth Sunday of Advent.

Today I do bring you glad tiding of great joy!

On Sunday our children and youth will bring us the dramatization of the best and most important story over told!

Our vestry is busy setting goals that will lead us in living out God's call on this church in the year ahead! Our meeting Monday was filled with joy and laughter!

As of this date we have seen an 80% increase in promised giving in 2011! We still need to hear from over 20 families. Making a faith promise is a part of our spiritual life, our response to God's call, and it is an essential part of church membership. If you have not put your faith promise in writing, I strongly encourage you to do so.

Our budget deficit for 2010 is far less that projected. God is truly good! He will bless us as we are faithful!!

The Lord is doing a great thing here in our midst, and he is inviting us to join him!

These are glad tiding, indeed, and a harbinger of the greatest glad tiding of all –that God came to us in the person of Jesus. I pray you are moved by the children's innocence today as they tell the gospel story.

Dear Parish Family,

This Sunday will be the third Sunday of Advent, which is known as the Sunday of Joy. Our joy builds as we draw nearer to the celebration of our Lord?s birth. This week we light the pink candle on the Advent wreath.

Our readings include I saiah 35:1-10, James 5:7-10, and Matthew 11:2-9. The Psalm appointed for this Sunday is Psalm 146:4-9 (we have omitted the Psalm during Advent).

During Advent our Old Testament reading comes from the prophets. In Year A we hear from the prophet Isaiah each week. (We read through the scriptures on a 3 year cycle, and this is Year A.) The prophets of old had a difficult life, called as they were to speak God?s word to people who did not want to hear. In today?s passage Isaiah is offering words of hope to God?s people. Those words of hope echo through the centuries to us, assuring us, too, that for those who trust in the Lord, mourning is turned into joy.

The office of prophet has not ceased to be. Listen today for the word of the Lord for us!

It is not often that we have the opportunity to hear first hand about the miracles God is working among our brothers and sisters in christ both near and far. On Sunday we will extend a warm welcome to The Rt. Rev. John Guernsey and his wife, the Rev. Meg Guernsey. +John is the diocesan bishop for the Diocese of the Holy Spirit, and our bishop here at South Riding Church. We are delighted to have both of the Guernseys with us as we celebrate the second Sunday of Advent.

We have the joy of celebrating with four members of our congregation as they are confirmed: Steve Coates, Gail Haddock, Don Holt, and Eric Olson. "Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop" (1979 Book of Common Prayer). Bruce and Meghan Neumann, having been previously confirmed, are being received into the Anglican Church in North America. We rejoice at God?s work in the lives of all six of these faithful individuals, and we look forward to continuing in ministry with them.

Our readings for Sunday include Isaiah 11:1-10, Psalm 72:17-, 18-19, Romans 15:4-13, and Matthew 3:1-12. My prayer today and every day is that you meet the living God face to face in our worship.

Dear Parish Family,

I'm praying for each household to know and respond to the abundant blessings of our almighty God as we celebrate this national day of Thanksgiving. As we gather to celebrate the day let us offer prayers of praise to God for all he has done and petitions on behalf of those who do not have the joy of gathering to celebrate.

This Sunday will be the first Sunday of Advent, marking the beginning the church year. Advent is a season of waiting, of expectation, of preparation. In a culture of instant everything from mashed potatoes to media, to instant gratification, we need ask ourselves, "Have we forgotten the value of waiting, of looking forward with expectancy." Advent is a season that had fallen out of favor (If it was ever in favor).

With the change of church seasons you will notice a change in the liturgy. We begin by incorporating our children in the lighting of the Advent wreath. Being a more penitential season, the confession is moved to the beginning of the service. A different Eucharistic prayer is used, one that is more muted in tone, more "basic." As in Lent, alleluias are dropped from the spoken liturgy, though we might still sing one on occasion. More silence is incorporated into the service, as we seek to remove ourselves from the frenetic pace of what I call the Christmas crazies. My prayer is that you will find refreshment for your soul in our time of worship together.

Our readings for Sunday include: Isaiah 2:1-5, Romans 13:11-14, and Matthew 24:36-44.

Psalm 122 is the psalm appointed for the day. However, we will not use the psalm during Advent to permit a bit of silence in the service.

Let's look forward with expectation to the coming anew of Jesus into every heart as we worship him in Spirit and in truth.

Dear Parish Family,

Last Sunday we had a wonderful, brief, parish meeting where the revised core values and new vision and mission statements were shared. Thanks to all who were able to attend.

On Saturday, December 4th we will be hosting "Breakfast with St. Nicholas (aka Bishop John Guernsey). This event is open to the young and young at heart, and to those in the community. We are praying that every member will forward the attached flier to friends and neighbors, and will also pick some up at church to give to those in your neighborhood.

This Sunday we celebrate the last Sunday after Pentecost. Traditionally this Sunday has been called "Christ the King" Sunday. Our readings will include Jeremiah 23:1-6, Psalm 46, Colossians 1:11-20, and Luke 23:33-43.

Christ is King over all that is and was and is yet to be. His coming is promised in the Jeremiah reading for today and his crucifixion sets the scene for the gospel reading. In Colossians Paul extols some of Christ's characteristics in a beautiful Christ hymn. Jesus is the one in whom all things hold together – and he chooses to live in us! We do indeed have great treasure in clay jars.

As we come together to worship let's give thanks that we worship the King of Kings. As we join our voices let's remember that God inhabits the praises of His people; he is here in the midst of us.

Dear Parish Family,

We are quickly closing in on the end of the long "Season after Pentecost," with just today and next Sunday left. Our readings for this week, the 25^th Sunday after Pentecost, include Malachi 3:16-4:2a, Psalm 98, 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13, and Luke 21:5-19. In the readings we already begin to hear the overtones of Advent, with dire predictions about the end of time.

In the midst of those dire warnings we hear the best news – truly unbelievable news – that we are God's treasured possession. Though our righteousness is as filthy rags, we are God's treasure! We are treasured – blessed, not so we can boast, but so we, in turn, can be a blessing.

Our church exists to bless others by helping them know Jesus. On Sunday we will be sharing important information about the future of the parish. Please stick around to hear it. You won't want to miss "being in the know!" The meeting will be short, and a light lunch will be served.

Dear Parish Family,

This Sunday we celebrate All Saints' Day, which falls each year on November 1^st. All Saints Day is a time to recall what it means to have been transferred from the kingdom of this world into God's Kingdom. We live not as those cut off from God or oppressed by the enemy of our souls, but as those who are redeemed, forgiven, loved and free. It is also a time to give thanks for those saints who have gone before us into the nearer presence of Jesus.

As a part of our worship sunday we will focus on recommitting ourselves to those promises made at our baptism and/or confirmation.

Our Bible readings for the day are those appointed for All Saints' Day, and include: Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18; Psalm 149; Revelation 7:2-4, 9-17; and Matthew 5:1-12.

My prayer as we gather is that we each prepare to welcome God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit into our midst. He longs to draw near to us. Let us long to draw near to him!

Dear Family in Christ,

I have just returned from a week away assisting in the leadership of a year long course in advanced inner healing ministry. I've been privileged to teach with this course for the past five years. Every time I work with this ministry I see the power of God at work up close and personal as people are restored and set free.

In today's gospel reading we hear of Zacchaeus the tax collector. Zacchaeus doesn't yet know the Lord. He is a man with a past, and his past isn't pretty. He is cheat, a thief, a sinner; but he is curious about Jesus. He wants to see the man and to hear him speak. Jesus sees his receptiveness ot he good news he bears, and invites himself to dinner.

At the end of the dinner Jesus makes the great proclamation, "Today salvation has come to this house… for the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost."

Salvation means more than pie in the sky by and by… salvation means that we have moved into the kingdom of Light, God's kingdom. During this past week I have seen people healed in ways that helps them experience more fully the joy of being a part of the Kingdom of God. Thanks be to God that he wants todo that for each one of us!

I look forward to worshipping with you tomorrow as we celebrate the goodness of God.

Dear Parish Family,

I am praying for you all as you gather this morning for worship. Please pray for me as I head off to North Carolina to teach and mentor a group starting off in a year long process of being trained to minister in the areas of inner healing and deliverance ministry.

Please welcome again the Reverend Pamela Meeks, who will be celebrating Eucharist and opening God's word with you all. She is drawing on the following scripture for today's message: Joel 2:3-32, Psalm 65, Revelation 6:12-17, and John 7:37-39.

I draw to your attention two up and coming projects / events in our parish. Operation Christmas Child is nearly upon us. Remember those 32 shoe boxes for third world children we filled last year? I understand that was the largest number to date that we, as a congregation, have filled. My challenge to all of us this year is to double the number to 70 boxes (though I am secretly praying we can fill 100 boxes). Begin now skipping those Starbucks drinks and saving that money to fill an extra box or two! Look for our older youth to begin asking for donations in the near future.The second event is our children's Christmas pageant (yes, I know it is only October). Look for information to come home in a week or two regarding commitment and rehearsals. Rehearsals begin in about a month.

Parents, children and youth, On Sunday, October 31st we will recognize each child or youth who has turned in a form indicating they have served or helped someone. Please remember to get those forms turned in!

I rejoice with you all this day at what the Lord is doing in our midst!

Dear Parish Family,

I am so glad to be back with you after our time away. The weather was perfect on the Outer Banks and in the North Carolina Mountains, and clergy conference was absolutely terrific. I came back refreshed and renewed, and so excited about our church and what the future holds for us!

Please note the following opportunity for women: Arcola Methodist is hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness workshop on Monday, October 18th. They will be providing a chili dinner beforehand with beef, chicken and veggie chili at 6:30 p.m. The presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. You are invited to come and to bring your sisters, daughters and friends. The writer of the ad writes, "I promise you will not be pressured to join our church - this is just one of the many public services we are providing this year to help the community. Hope to see you there!"

Ladies, Sunday the 17th also marks our final "Women's Retreat on the Run," beginning at 12:45 at the 304. Please plan to join in the discussion and fellowship! We will also be brainstorming about some other women's events. A light lunch will be provided.

I have attached an invitation from Don Holt and Gail Haddock with regard to another opportunity for fellowship and outreach. Please RSVP asap if you are able to come.

On Sunday we will celebrate the "Children's Sabbath." It is a day to reflect on our stewardship with regard to caring for our children, and for those children in places where their basic needs are not met. Our children will remain with us this Sunday rather than going off to Sunday School, so that they can be included in our entire worship experience. The sermon will be interactive and geared to engage children as well as adults..

At the time of the consecration of the elements, I will invite and youth or children who want to, to come forward to help.

Our scripture lessons for Sunday include Jeremiah 31:27-34, Psalm 119:97-104, 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5, and Luke 18:1-8.

Let us come together on Sunday to make a joyful noise unto the Lord, celebrating all he has done for us.

Dear Parish Family,

Our life together offers many opportunities for deepening our relationship with Jesus. In addition to weekly worship and prayer, there are a number of small group opportunities available to us. As we currently have no Sunday morning adult education or small group offerings (this will change as we grow together!), our meeting together during the week for deeper feeding becomes vitally important. As your rector I am committed to multiplying the number of groups meeting, and to encouraging each and every adult and youth in the parish to become a part of one! If you have not joined a small group, please consider this your personal invitation. If there is no group that meets your needs (be it scheduling or topic) would you please bring that to me so I might work toward rectifying that? I am convicted that if I am to live into God's call on my life as priest, I must put tremendous energy into "presenting everyone mature in Christ." (Col. 1:28).

Our readings for Sunday include Amos 6:1a, 4-7; Psalm 146,; 1 Timothy 6:6-20, and Luke 16:19-31. Paul begins and ends his letter to Timothy with an admonition against false teachers. The only way to know true teachers from false is to be deeply committed to learning truth. God's Word is truth. Let's commit to coming together to be as iron sharpening iron, so that we each might stand firm in the truth and light of Jesus. See you Sunday.

Dear Parish Family,

I'm so very excited about an upcoming two events in our parish life together. On the first weekend in December our bishop, The Right Reverend John Guernsey, will be with us, not just for the day, but for the weekend. If there are topics you would like the bishop to address while he is with us, please let Paul Branch, Senior Warden, or me know. The second event is our Faith Alive Weekend. You will be hearing more about this wonderful opportunity as weeks go past, but for now let me just say that is a weekend opportunity to laugh and eat and cry and laugh and worship together. There is wonderful children's ministry, teen ministry, and adult ministry that take place. Folks across the nation are already praying for our Faith Alive weekend.The date is January 21-23, 2011. Please mark your calendars and save the dates!

Sunday's readings include: Amos 8:4-7, Psalm 113, 1 Timothy 2:1-7, and Luke 16:1-13. The thunderous thought I will not put in print here lest little eyes see it and misinterpret it (and get into trouble)! Therefore, stay tuned, and you will hear it during the message. You won't want to miss it; it could change your life… at least – your prayer life!

Worship is a habit. My prayer is that you will continually strengthen your worship habit!

Dear Parish Family,

Please remember to drop your books, Cd's and DVD's for the yard sale off at the Branch home. items can be dropped off any time today. Just leave them on the front porch. Help is still needed with set up and clean up. Set up crew is meeting at 6:30 at the Branch Home. Clean up will most likely begin about 11:30.

Women's Retreat on the Run begins Sunday at 1:30. This is a chance to discuss The Shack and to share together as women. Please respond to this email if you plan to attend.

Please keep your vestry and clergy in your prayers as we meet Friday evening and all day Saturday to pray for God's vision for SRCA.

Mark your calendar now for bowling on Sunday, September 19th, fro 2-4 pm.

This Sunday we will have several special parts in our worship service. The children's message will be given by one of our Children's Ministry Coordinators, Brad Bennink. He will be describing an opportunity for our younger members to receive recognition for "being Christ" to those around them. This is important for all of us to hear, as we all need to support our younger members. We will also be recognizing our acolytes with prayers and a special presentation. Lastly, this is the last day for our nursery workers, Jessica and Veronica, to be with us. We plan to wish them well and send them off in style.

The Sunday readings include Exodus 32:7-14, Psalm 51:1-11, 1 Timothy 1:12-17, and Luke 15:1-10. We will hear of our ancestors who were so quick to fall into idolatry, and of Jesus' mission to seek and save the lost. In that there is a reminder that the church does not exist so that we can all hang out together, as much fun as that is! The church, which is Christ's body on earth, is called to the same mission he so clearly identified. We are called to seek and save the lost – by introducing them to Jesus. That's the thunderous thought for the week – the church does not exist for us. We, the church, exist for others.

If you've been away for a while, plan to join us on Sunday as we worship God together. It's the very best start to any week!

Dear SRCA Family,

I pray you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. I did miss being withyou all, but I hear things went well on Sunday. Thankyou for your welcome to Rev. Sue Hardman.

PRAYERS FOR THE PARISH are scheduled for tonight (Tuesday) from 7 until 8 at the 304. Let's meet together to pray for the life and growth of our parish! Please rmemeberyour vestry in pryaer this week especially as we prepare for our vestry retreat Friday evening and all day Saturday.

NEEDED: Yardsale Help! Saturday, Sept. 11. We need help with set up and pack up, as well as a few hands to help Bruce man the table. Set up is at 7:30. Take down will most likely begin about 11:45, depending on the crowd. Please reply to this email if you can help. We also need your books, dvds and music cds to sell. These can be dropped off at the yard sale on Saturday morning. I willsend out more info regarding the location. If you need to drop things off beforethat, they can come tothe Branch house (call first) or to the 304 later on Friday evening (after 9:00 - call my cell number, found below).

Our ACOLYTE GUILD will be instituted this Sunday, Sept. 12th during our 10:00 worship. Each acolyte will receive a special acolyte cross showing thier membership in the guild. Trainig dates and treat dates will be forthcoming

WOMEN'S RETREAT ON THE RUN begins this Sunday, September 12 from 1:30 until 3:00 at the 304. Four sessions are scheduled. Our conversation will center around the book, The Shack. Please let me know via response to this email if you plan to attend on Sunday.

WOMEN"S BIBLE STUDY BEGINNING Monday, September 13 at Melinda's house. We will meet at 9:15 to discuss possible topices, frequency of meeting, etc. It's fine to bring young children. If you need Melinda's address, please call the church office or my cell.
